Church History |
The McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church is the only Presbyterian congregation in the McConnellsburg area. The communicant members number 185 (year 2000 figure). The complex consists of the church, an education building and Fellowship House which houses the church office. Only the Sanctuary is handicap accessible. Historically, this valley known as the Great Cove was settled by the Scots-Irish who arrived before 1750. This earliest place of worship, with an occasional preacher, was under the sky. As they grew in number, they erected houses of worship: log stone, wood and brick. From mergers nationally and locally, they became one. We have a Sunday morning worship service (nursery available) a superb adult choir, bell choir, Sunday School, youth group, Presbyterian Women's group, study group, adult social club and also a Library. Our pastor is a member of the McConnellsburg Ministerium and the congregation cooperates in community services. The membership consists of those who trace their ancestors back to the earliest settlers and those who moved to our county in the succeeding years. Esther Nelson, Church Historian |
